All-wheel drive will cost you $1,500 extra on the SE and SEL. All of these prices are MSRP, and they exclude Hyundai's destination charge of $1,335. There's only a single available package - the Activity package - and it is available only to the SEL trim at a cost of $3,660. The SE is followed by the SEL at $29,400, the Night at $38,210, the new XRT at $39,850, and the Limited at $41,070. This year, the base price of a new Hyundai Santa Cruze SE starts at $26,650. Are its striking looks and sharp driving experience enough to overcome these disadvantages? A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine in naturally aspirated 191-horsepower form - or with turbocharging and 281 hp - provides the power but, unlike the Maverick, its engine choices are tied to the trims, and it lacks the Ford's thrifty hybrid option. Its $26k base price makes the Hyundai Santa Cruz more expensive than the $23k Maverick - and too close for comfort to the mid-size brigade like the Chevy Colorado, which starts at around $30k. This is a rather limited class because the only other unibody truck around is the near-$40k mark is the mid-size Honda Ridgeline. It was beaten to the punch by the boldly futuristic Hyundai Santa Cruz, which arrived shortly before the Ford. The top-selling model in this niche market is the square-jawed Ford Maverick, but it wasn't the first. These light-duty trucks are of unibody construction and based on car or compact SUV platforms, but they're still expected to haul and tow alongside having car-like driving abilities. See our preview of the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz.Trucks are the most popular vehicles in the USA, but compact trucks have only recently been accepted by the masses. We think we’ll be seeing more of these on the street in the near future, helping their owners haul their oversized things. ![]() Efficiency (our Santa Cruz test vehicle was rated at 22 miles per gallon combined) and maneuverability will likely be major considerations too, enhancing the appeal of the Santa Cruz. On the whole, compact trucks like the Santa Cruz will likely become a favorite for people in urban areas who need that open-air area to carry extra cargo such as surfboards or oversized boxes. The bed even has a 115-volt power inverter and LED lighting. Adding to the convenience factor, the Santa Cruz also has under-bed and sidewall storage compartments while the rear seat has a 60/40 split and can flip up for additional storage space inside. (Lower-end Santa Cruzes get a 190-horsepower engine.) Driving dynamics of the Santa Cruz were first-rate, feeling very much like a car or compact SUV to the extent where we wondered if most shoppers even needed to opt for a midsize truck anymore, while the engine delivered more than enough grunt climbing the hilly roads.Ĭomfort of the Santa Cruz was also terrific, with features such as ventilated front seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar support, smart cruise control with stop-and-go capability, and self-leveling rear suspension, Other equipment that comes on the Limited includes dual 10.25 screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, navigation, 20-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a power sunroof, an integrated tonneau cover for the bed, a surround view monitor, and a Bose sound system. We tried out the top-end Limited trim of the Santa Cruz which came with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine making 275 horsepower paired to an 8-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission and the HTRAC all-wheel-drive system. The Cartrast team managed to spend some time with a Santa Cruz on the hilly paths of Malibu during the Motor Press Guild’s Drive Day program and we discovered why small trucks may end up selling in larger numbers than previously believed. Responding to consumers’ desires, Hyundai has created the Santa Cruz small pickup truck, based on a crossover, rather than a truck platform. Small trucks are becoming in vogue at the moment, offering a high degree of versatility, efficiency, and maneuverability in an urban environment as well as on tight trails during excursions off the beaten path. ![]()
